Directors' Statement
We came to this film from different places. Matt first found model rocketry during the early days of COVID, after randomly picking up a small rocket kit at a hobby shop. What started as a simple way to pass the time quickly turned into something much bigger: local clubs, larger rockets, high-power certification, and a whole community built around curiosity, engineering, and the joy of making something fly. Kaitlyn came into the project knowing very little about model rocketry, but the father-daughter relationship at the heart of the story immediately drew her in.
As we spent more time with this world, we realized how expansive and meaningful the story truly was. Model rocketry touches on competition, education, regulation, international and domestic freedom, access, mentorship, and the enduring desire to build something with your own hands and send it skyward. At a time when the world is increasingly focused on space exploration, the people keeping that spirit alive at the grassroots level inspired us.
Though this film is short, it holds a wide range of ideas. At its core, however, it remains a deeply personal and human journey. Through Ashley and Tim’s story, we wanted to capture not only the beauty and complexity of the sport but also the community, imagination, and resilience that make it meaningful. This film is about model rocketry, but it is also about curiosity, legacy, and the people who help us imagine what is possible.
